It’s a Wonderful Life: Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to end it all on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director's optimistic vision may have darkened during his experiences making military films in World War II). Capra's triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties and disappointments of life, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement.

Holiday Inn: Astaire and Crosby play partner/rival song-and-dance men who compete for the hand of their performing partner, played by Virginia Dale. After Crosby loses, he moves to the Connecticut countryside where he creates a resort that is only open on holidays and puts on shows with the help of Marjorie Reynolds. Dumped by Dale, Astaire makes a drunken arrival at the inn on New Year's Eve and dances with Reynolds. He decides she'll be his new partner, but doesn't remember what she looks like, setting off a frenzied search at every subsequent show while the once-bitten Crosby does his best to steer him off track. Includes “White Christmas” among other favourite Irving Berlin songs.

A Christmas Carol:Cranky and curmudgeonly Scrooge learns the error of his unkind ways and is taught the true meaning of the holidays when he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future. Includes bonus features - George Cole remembers Alastair Sim, "Richard Gordon Remembers George Minter & Renown Pictures", "Charles Dickens - His Life & Times", Original American and British Theatrical Trailers, Before & After Restoration Comparison, Cast Bios, and more.

Blackadder’s Christmas Carol:The self-serving Edmund Blackadder (Rowen Atkinson before his Mr. Bean success) is the most kindhearted man in England. Robbie Coltrane, the Spirit of Christmas, shows Edmund visions of past and future to not quite the desired effect. With Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, and Miranda Richardson.

The All Dogs Christmas Carol:All your favorite characters from the All Dogs Go To Heaven children's series are back in this captivating canine retelling of a Christmas classic the whole family will love! It's shaping up to be a wonderful Christmas for all the precious pooches at the Flea Bite Cafe. But the festivities and goodwill don't mean anything to Carface, a big bully of a bulldog, who plans to ruin Christmas for everybody.

Music

Barenaked for the holidays / Barenaked Ladies
The Barenaked Ladies take old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level. Classics like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas" and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals show up. Includes appearances by Sarah McLachlan and Michael Bublé.

The Chipmunks Greatest Christmas Hits
Alvin still wants a hula-hoop for Christmas – and he wants it now! Alvin, Simon, and Theodore struggle to make it all the way through "The Twelve Days of Christmas," and Rudolph makes a guest appearance on "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer." David Seville (at normal speed) does a poignant version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Noël / Josh Groban
With a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material (songs range from the sacred to the secular), Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Produced by David Foster.

Music

Raising Sand / Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
Perhaps only the fantasy duo of King Kong and Bambi could be a more bizarre pairing than Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Yet on Raising Sand, their haunting and brilliant collaboration, the Led Zeppelin screamer and Nashville's most hypnotic song whisperer seem made for each other…..(An Amazon.com review)

Shine / Joni Mitchell
“Shine,” produced and arranged by Ms. Mitchell, is her first album of new material in nine years, and among its 10 songs is a setting of Rudyard Kipling's poem “If” and a version of her hit “Big Yellow Taxi.” (Sisario, Ben. New York Times, July 25, 2007)

Songs of Mass Destruction / Annie Lennox
Ms. Lennox's 2003 album, “Bare,” recorded in the wake of her divorce, pondered betrayal and separation in sumptuously orchestrated ballads. “Songs of Mass Destruction” is more varied and often more muscular. One song, “Coloured Bedspread,” harks back to the pumping electro of Eurythmics, while “Ghosts in My Machine” confronts inner demons over a driving Louisiana accordion riff as Ms. Lennox sings: “I hurt too much/I feel too much/I dread too much/I dream too much.” (Pareles, Jon. New York Times. September 30, 2007)

Batch Searching: You have to give it a try!

There are two options for batch searching. The first comes with the standard BookWhere and allows you to enter up to 50 search “keys”. These “keys” can be ISBN or ISSN or even Titles or Authors. Generally, most catalogers type in or scan in ISBNs and launch a search against one or more databases for their batch of “keys”.

If you haven’t tried this capability in BookWhere, join us for one of our weekly Webinars and we’ll show you how to use it successfully.

The second option for batch searching allows you to submit a search for more than 50 “keys” and it also allows you to upload a file of “keys”. Again, in most cases catalogers are using this feature to search for batches of ISBNs. This added service is available for an additional yearly cost. BookWhere Tip – a Reminder about the Analysis Window

There are so many versions of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol that you may be in the happy situation of finding too many.

Tip Reminder: If you have too many results for your title search, as we did for A Christmas Carol, then add an Analytic field that will help you quickly isolate just the records you want. In this case, we want the classic movie starring Alastair Sim, not any of the other versions… even though Rowan Atkinson’s version may be very, very tempting.

Since cast and director names appear in 700 fields, they are often indexed as Authors. However, sorting the record list by Author name will not guarantee that we see Alastair Sim. BookWhere will show the first Author listed in the record with preference to the 100 tag and then to the 700 tags. So, in order to make sure we can limit our results to Alastair Sim, the actor, we can add the author index to the Analysis Panel in order to see all “Author” names.

It’s easy to add a field to the Analysis Panel. Go to Options > Settings > Rules and click on the + to expand the Analysis group. Then, if your field is not currently in that display, just find it in the Rules column on the right-hand side of that tab’s listings, and click to highlight and then use the Include Rule bar to add it to Analysis. If there are too many analysis fields, you can highlight them in the expanded list and click on the Exclude Rule button to remove them.

There certainly are a lot of versions of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol! We find about 130 titles in this single database.

Clicking on the box beside Alastair Sim’s name makes it easy to see the right records at a glance and then to choose the one with the highest score we can sort on the rating as well as score column.

WebClarity Product Spotlight: Editing a MARC record with MARC Notepad before importing into your ILS

There are some good records for the new Josh Groban CD, Noël. The one with the highest score does not display the title diacritics properly, though.

We can send two of the records to MARC Notepad from BookWhere to compare and to correct the title diacritics.

By using the Tile option in Windows, we can see both records at the same time – and use copy-and-paste to correct the diacritics.

Using MARC Notepad we can also add new tags, so we’ve also added a summary note and tracings for the producer and some guest artists to create a more complete record.
