The MARC Notepad editor is the perfect companion to BookWhere for day to day copy cataloguing activities as well as retrospective conversion projects.

Instead of importing records into your local automation system then retrieving and modifying them why not take care of your preprocessing at the time you capture your records? Use MARC Notepad to edit, remove extraneous tags and subfields and even add local holdings information. You will dramatically improve your copy cataloging workflow.

  • Quickly enhance quality of records to match local standards
  • Increase Staff efficiency: User-definable macros provide global editing of records to reduce repetitive tasks
  • Basic and Advanced (MARC format rule-based) tag editors
  • User-configurable options to suit the local cataloguing environment
  • MARC Tag validator checking
  • Displays Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Russian and other languages
  • Can convert records between character sets to match local library system requirements
  • Records can be transferred directly from BookWhere
  • Facilitate data clean-up and conversion projects
  • Work with files of MARC records from other sources or extracted from your local system
TechTalk
  • Supports display and editing of MARC-8 (extended Latin-1, ANSEL), Latin-1 extended and Unicode™ character set encoded records
  • Supports standard MARC21 and UNIMARC format records with tag and subfield rules and descriptions
  • Supported on Windows™ XP/2000/NT4 operating system
  • If your PC can run the above operating systems, you can run MARC Notepad! (FYI: 10MB hard disk space for software recommended but you may need more space for storage of MARC record files)

Re-Installing or Moving BookWhere

Licensing, Downloading, Product Activation, Restoring Settings...

Licensing
A BookWhere license permits installation on a single computer workstation. If your organization requires BookWhere on more than one computer more than one serial number will be required, or optionally a single serial number which allows the specified number of workstation activations can be issued. Please contact sales@webclarity.info to arrange for additional licenses.

Downloading Software
As long as you have a current Maintenance / AutoSync agreement on your BookWhere Licenses, you will be able to download the current version of the product from our website. This applies to all of our software products: BookWhere, BookWhere Academic and MARC Notepad.

You will need your current Serial Number and a working email address to request a software download link from: www.webclarity.info/download

Product Activation
When BookWhere is launched for the first time, the software registers itself with our Product Activation Service. Once activated, this serial number cannot be used to activate on another computer (unless it is a multiple-license serial number). Please contact WebClarity Technical Support (support@webclarity.info) quoting your Serial Number to request Product Activation when re-installing BookWhere.

Restoring Settings
We have prepared a support page which covers the procedure for Backup and Restore of BookWhere Settings 4.3.1. Note: This procedure can only be used for copying settings between two installations of BookWhere at the same revision level (e.g. BookWhere 4.3.1). BookWhere 5.0 will introduce a simpler procedure for backing up user settings.

BookWhere and Firewalls

Is your Network preventing you from searching some libraries?

In an attempt to protect computer users and systems from malicious attacks many organizations have installed or will install a network device called a firewall. Some users may also have firewall software installed on their local machines for the same purpose.

The Z39.50 search service normally operates on port 210, however, many library system vendors have implemented the service on alternate ports. Some vendors also allow library customers to run their Z39.50 servers on a port of their own choosing. To successfully search many library databases, your workstation will need to be permitted Outbound TCP Connections on several ports in addition to port 210.

Read our support page about the Ports required to use BookWhere effectively and pass this information along to your network / firewall administrator to confirm that you have access to all available database resources.

6. Please, please, don't ask me for any more books about dinosaurs.
5. I'm a cataloger. Please speak clearly and spell proper nouns.

WebClarity Update …continued

Throughout this past year WebClarity staff have met with a number of our customers for their input on what works well and ways in which we may improve our products to help all of our customers more. That feedback has informed us and we have worked to further streamline and simplify workflow in our new releases.

Through AutoSync, we’ve delivered well over 1000 valuable database updates in this past year alone and all told, we’ve exceeded the 2000 database mark: Both new benchmarks for BookWhere.

Along with release 5.0, we’ll have ‘How To’ video demonstrations available on our evaluation CDs as well as from our web page. Potential new customers can become familiar with the benefits of BookWhere and MARC Notepad much more quickly that was ever previously possible.

Along with all this development, our sales folks have invigorated the overall marketing look. Our Ostrich, that has come to represent “Looking beyond” in combination with speed and agility of BookWhere will soon represent WebClarity in all it’s products. Our new look hopes to introduce a new flare with a lighter step in our stride melded with just a touch of “Tech” so that we don’t lose sight of the excellent technological base that is embodied in BookWhere.

I am very pleased with our growth and progress over this past year and once again, wish to thank each and every one of you for your continued business with WebClarity. Please do feel free to keep in touch with us.. your comments are very highly valued.

Sincerely,
Phil Smith

Catalaugher’s Corner

AT OUR small library, we telephone our patrons when the book they requested has arrived. I couldn't understand why one woman laughed after I told her the latest Colleen McCullough book was in until I realized I had said, "This is the Public Library calling, and we have An Indecent Obsession for you." (Reprinted from: http://www.becquet.com/laughter/50.htm)

I WAS waiting in line to check out some books at the library desk. Ahead of me a teenager stood empty-handed, shifting his weight from one slim, tightly clad hip to the other. The librarian looked at him enquiringly. "I want a play by Shakespeare," the youth blurted out. The librarian, suppressing a smile, asked gently, "Which one?" The young man shifted his hips again, ruffed up his hair with one hand, cupped his chin between thumb and forefinger of the other, all the while frowning in concentration. Finally he raised his head and looked at the librarian. "William," he replied triumphantly. (Reprinted from: http://www.becquet.com/laughter/50.htm)

Patron: "I am looking for a globe of the earth."
Librarian: "We have a table-top model over here."
Patron: "No, that's not good enough. Don't you have a life-size?"
Librarian: (pause) "Yes, but it's in use right now”
