BookWhere Features List |
Current Release: 7.2.0 |
New Features Overview Version 7
Upgrading from a previous version of BookWhere? This New Features Overview
will help experienced users quickly identify and enjoy the new
features of this new release of BookWhere. Please take a moment to review this page.
- Support for Microsoft Windows Vista
Previous versions of BookWhere had to be installed using Vista's Compatibility Wizard. BookWhere 7 will install seamlessly under Windows Vista.
- Compatibility with Microsoft Internet Explorer 8
Microsoft's newest browser, IE 8, was causing earlier versions of BookWhere
to fail during the installation phase requiring that IE 8 be uninstalled
so that BookWhere could install properly. This issue has been corrected
and BookWhere 7 can be installed on machines running IE 8. BookWhere 7
also resolves a long standing issue with previous versions of Internet
Explorer that could cause BookWhere to spontaneously shutdown, often while
using other Windows applications with BookWhere running in the background.
- Support for idPass Authentication
BookWhere provides connection information for thousands of library catalogs
and databases. Although most of these are freely accessible, some are also
subscription databases. These subscription services will usually require
a username and password in
order to allow searching their databases. Some services also require a
higher level of security when authenticating so BookWhere now provides
support for the idPass Authentication method. Previous
versions of BookWhere only support Open Authentication.
- Editing of MARC records
BookWhere 7 is now integrated with our companion product MARC Notepad. A
single click on Edit MARC Record on
the Toolbar will place selected records in the edit window and bring MARC
Notepad into focus. A real time saver, MARC Notepad allows you to
clean up records,
remove extraneous tags, correct headings or add default holdings tags prior
to importing the records into your own database. If you have not purchased
MARC Notepad with BookWhere, you may request a free trial of this feature
at any time. Simply click on the Edit MARC Record to
open a web page and request your trial.
- Simpler Management of Serial Numbers
If you have already been enjoying MARC Notepad, with BookWhere you know that
a separate serial number was required to activate the MARC Notepad software.
This can become very confusing when workstations are upgraded and these
licenses need to be moved. With BookWhere 7, the editing capability can
be turned on as a BookWhere Feature, with no need for a separate MARC Notepad
Serial Number.
- Single installer for BookWhere and MARC Notepad
We are always looking for ways to simplify the installation and upgrade of
our products. We have integrated the installers for these products so upgrading
BookWhere
will also install the latest version of MARC Notepad automatically. If
you already own a license for MARC Notepad you will not need to download
and
install
the
separate upgrade. If you do not use MARC Notepad you might like to enjoy
a free trial, otherwise the software simply remains dormant but available
should you decide later to give it a try!
- MARC XML export format
BookWhere can now export properly formatted MARC XML files. This is of value to some of the newer integrated systems, such as Inmagic Genie, that import records in MARC XML rather than standard MARC format.
- XML Source Database Support
Some databases actually provide records in XML format. Not to be confused
with MARC XML, which is a specific XML schema. BookWhere now allows for
configuration of XSL translation files for specific XML schemas.

New Features Overview Versions 5 & 6
- Record Scoring and Rating Service
Let BookWhere help you choose the best marc cataloguing record. Our Record Scoring and Rating Service, available to all WebClarity Maintenance subscribers, lets BookWhere help you easily select the best records from a set of results. For current maintenance customers this service automatically assigns a weighted score to each record displayed. A numeric score between 0 and 100 is assigned. BookWhere uses a traffic light metaphor to visually identify Good, Average, Poor or Unknown quality MARC records. Without a current Maintenance Agreement BookWhere is unable to obtain a score for results and all records will render with the Unknown icon.
- Updated Record List
BookWhere's Record List now shows Rating and Score as attributes of records returned by a search. Click on the column heading Rating or Score to sort records according to these values. Media Type Icons can also be sorted now!
- Updated Analysis Window
BookWhere's Analysis Window now shows Rating icons to group records returned by a search according to their quality. A single click lets you filter out all but the best records from your search!
- Record Analysis using Media Icons
Having difficulty locating multimedia materials? BookWhere 6 allows records to be analyzed based on their media type (format from record leader) using easily identifiable icons. Select the desired format to limit record list results to just those types of records being searched. e.g. CDs, DVDs, Computer files, Books, etc.

- Workflow Improvement - Export/SendTo process
A checkbox on the Export/SendTo status message dialog allows for suppression of this popup. For experienced users, save several mouse movements and clicks for each record exported.
- Easily Set a Default database group
Simply right-mouse click over any Database Group in the Choose Databases Window and choose 'Set as Default'. BookWhere will automatically select this group of databases for searching in all future sessions. No more manually selecting databases to search!
- Use Export and SendTo when opening a file of MARC records
Have you ever received a file of MARC records and wanted to use BookWhere to select and export or SendTo a subset of these records? The Actions menu now allows access to these features when a file of MARC records is opened in BookWhere.
- Windows platforms supported: Windows XP, Windows 2000
Since the release of BookWhere 5.0 we will no longer be supporting the Windows
95 or Windows 98 platforms. BookWhere 4.3.1 and BookWhere Academic 4.5.0 are
the last releases of BookWhere available for these older Windows operating
systems.
- Unicode™ support
BookWhere now supports search, display and export of MARC records
from encoded using MARC-8, Latin-1 or UTF-8. This is particularly important
when working with Arabic, CJK, Hebrew, Russian and many other non-Latin based
language materials. Although Unicode support is always on in BookWhere 5.0,
it is necessary to select a Unicode font on your PC which can render these
characters.
- Database Selection easier than ever!
Now that BookWhere provides connection information to nearly 3000 databases
we've created an easier and more intuitive Choose Databases window which includes filtering by keyword. The database list can more rapidly locate the desired library resource. In addition you may customize the display of database attributes to
your liking, create groups of databases, add local database definitions and
delete library catalogs from the full list, all from one easy to use interface.
- One click Management of Database Groups (Favourites)
Right mouse-click over any Database in the list to instantly add it to one
of your Groups or create a new Group on the fly. Double-click on a group
name in the Choose Databases list to expand the group and see member databases.
Right mouse click over a member to remove it from the group. Choose any
group to make it a default for use in new search sessions(Options->Settings->General
tab).
- AutoSync Improvements
With the dramatic increase in the number of Z39.50 database connection parameters being maintained, an improved service now delivers updates to the BookWhere client several hundred times faster. As well database updates are now keyed against a unique internal record number at WebClarity so AutoSync will not damage Database Groups which may be defined locally each time we are notified of a library changing its connection parameters.
- Adding New Databases made easy!
Adding new databases is now easier than ever, right from the Choose Databases window: right mouse-click ->New Database and enter all of the database information on a single screen. You can even test the database definition from an option at the bottom of the screen. BookWhere will now
ask you if you would like to submit any locally added database entries
to WebClarity's Z39.50
Target Directory (supports BookWhere's AutoSync service).
- Network Test
In today's complex networking environments, we've made the process of determining connectivity even simpler - a network test within BookWhere can help to pinpoint connectivity problems due to local firewall policy.
- QuickSearch Toolbar
We've incorporated at the top of every search session a quick search toolbar that accomodates the majority of searches our users wish to complete without having additional dialog boxes opening to enter each query. The toolbar
comes complete with Search, Clear and Databases buttons. In combination
with the Options->Settings->General
tab 'Use QuickSearch Toolbar by default' it is possible to carry
out searches against your favourite databases without having additional dialog
boxes opening to enter each query.
- Improved Workflow when Exporting Records
If your process involves always exporting records (appending them) to the
same file, reduce the number of mouse-clicks when exporting records if
you do not need the Export Records File Save dialog and
the Export
Records Status message displayed. These options along with defining
the default export format, directory and filename can be configured under Options->Settings--Exporting tab.
- Enhanced Display Rules
BookWhere comes preloaded with hundreds of display rules. These rules are
basically the data elements extracted from MARC tags and subfields in retrieved
records and used when building the Record List display or when exporting
records in tabbed text format. Additional definitions have been added for:
- Alternate Graphic Representation (880)
Bibliographic
Level (Leader '07)
Character Coding Scheme (Leader
' 09)
Electronic Location and Access (856)
Imprint (260)
Location (852)
Main Entry - Personal Name (100)
Main Entry - Corporate Name (110)
Main Entry - Meeting
Name (111)
Main
Entry - Uniform Title (130)
Material Type (Leader '06-'07)
Type of Record (Leader '06)
Any of these new rules are available for use in the Record List or Record
Export Display Windows. See Settings: Rules for
configuration information.
- Revised Batch Searching
This has always been a feature of BookWhere but required the use of an external
text editor to create a list of ISBN's for searching. The workflow has
now been simplified to:
- Choose Databases
Enter
a Query (Batch tab)
Enter or scan in a list of up to 50 search
keys (such as ISBN's)
Choose the search field and click Search
- Batch Results Window
When carrying out a batch search, BookWhere will now sort the search keys
into two separate lists: matched and unmatched keys as the search is proceeding.
Once a the batch search is running switch to Window->Batch
Results Window to watch the progress of the search and switch
back to see results at Window->Session Window. Unmatched
keys can be searched again against a different
set of databases if desired.
- Extensive reorganization of File Locations/Windows Registry Settings
In preparation for the new versions of Windows due out this year,
and to make it easier to backup a BookWhere installation all files
related to the normal operation of which BookWhere are now stored in the
BookWhere program folder. Personal settings are stored in a file under
the user's Documents and Settings folder and documents
such as export files and session files will be saved by default to the
user's My Documents folder.
- Enhanced Product Activation
All of our software products require activation
over the Internet prior to first use. After installing BookWhere, should
any problem occur with your PC requiring re-installation a phone call or
email to support has been necessary. With BookWhere 5.0, re-installing
the product on the same computer will normally proceed without our intervention.
As always contact WebClarity
Technical Support should you require assistance with a re-install.
